The Challenge pitted high-profile members of the media, including Bill Simmons of ESPN.com and Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, against two NFL stars: Henne of the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants’ Osi Umenyiora. Not a traditional race, the Audi Efficiency Challenge was designed to see who could achieve the best fuel-efficiency in an Audi Q7 TDI clean diesel SUV while driving from the Audi USA headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, to Miami, Florida. Henne has selected the Berks County Community Foundation to receive the $20,000 donation that Audi will make in his name.

Finding practical ways to reduce automotive emissions and lessen America's energy dependence isn't something that can wait for technological breakthroughs years down the road, noted Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. Instead, car companies and government policy makers should immediately embrace promising new technologies that can quickly add up to make a real difference. In a wide-reaching speech at Audi's 100th Anniversary celebration in Sonoma, California, de Nysschen also discussed his thoughts on the future of luxury, asserting that the era of "legacy luxury" - products that convey status without regard to cost or resources consumed - is now at the end of its life cycle, with Audi representing the new era of "progressive luxury."

When it was first rolled out three years ago, the Audi Q7 performance SUV immediately achieved a leadership position – as a sporty, comfortable as well as high-performance recreational and business vehicle on a grand scale. Now Audi is making it even better – more elegant and more efficient, with lower emissions: the Q7 3.0 TDI consumes only 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers (25.85 US mpg). And now it’s also available in a new version as a TDI clean diesel, with the world’s cleanest diesel technology and even lower fuel consumption of only 8.9 liters/100 km (26.43 US mpg).

FSI Summary
• Audi FSI direct injection gasoline technology was born in the R8 Le Mans-winning sports car found on racetracks from 2000-2005, with its first U.S. application in the 2005 A6 3.2 FSI V6 sedan launched late in the 2004 calendar year. Using many of the same principles as TDI clean diesel technology, its high compression ratios allow for more power and torque with better fuel economy while increasing performance levels from previous engine generations. Audi Q7’s 3.6 FSI V6 engine and its 4.2 FSI V8 engines complement the TDI clean diesel engine joining the Audi Q7 family in April 2009.
TDI Clean Diesel Summary
• Audi TDI clean diesel is clean, quiet, efficient, and fast. Customers buy this technology because it saves them time and adds convenience because of its city/highway range, all in a very clean and high-tech manner.

With the streets and highways of America as its driving course, Audi proved clean diesel passes the real-world test. Completing the cross country Mileage Marathon, Audi's TDI fleet not only redefined diesel as a ultra-low emission alternative to gas-powered vehicles, but also posted noteworthy fuel efficiency numbers. Covering over 4800 miles from New York to Santa Monica, the Audi A3 TDI has averaged 45 mpg, the Audi A4 vehicles averaged 36 mpg over the drive, and the Audi Q5 TDI vehicles averaged 32 mpg. The Audi Q7 TDI vehicles, clean diesel SUVs which will be the first TDI vehicles available in the Unites States early next year, averaged an excellent 28 mpg over the entire drive.

The Audi Mileage Marathon, now completed, has provided convincing evidence of the efficiency of TDI engine technology. The fuel consumption of all 23 models in this 7,865-kilometer (4,887-mile) test was excellent. In its first tough road test since it was announced, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI with ultra low emission system performed outstandingly well: the world's cleanest diesel scored a best average fuel consumption of 7.1 l/100 km (33.13 US mpg).

The Audi Mileage Marathon is now into its third, decisive stage: when the fleet of 23 vehicles reaches Las Vegas, it will have completed about three-quarters of the total distance. In each successive stage, these cars from four Audi model lines have confirmed their exceptional fuel economy. The excellent results from the Audi A4 3.0 TDI quattro set a fine example: although its V6 TDI engine performs so well, its fuel consumption has been as low as 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers (44.38 US mpg) on many sections of the route.

The city streets of New York and Washington D.C., nor the highways of Ohio and Indiana could keep Audi’s TDI clean diesel vehicles from registering envious fuel efficiency totals over a three day blitz across a quarter of the country. Audi’s TDI vehicles completed the first wave of the Mileage Marathon, a 4,800 mile, coast-to-coast endurance drive showing U.S. drivers up close that Audi has recast diesel into an ultra-low emission and fuel efficient alternative to gas-powered engines.
